Sing to Your Idol!

I was teaching a course based upon the book of Daniel. We were discussing the 90 foot gold idol that King Nebuchadnezzar built and commanded all to worship.

Everyone in the study agreed that this was a huge afront to God, but when I put the idea of idols into different areas in our lives – money, sex, gossip, security, etc., things became a little more dicey and tougher to accept.

God popped an idea into my head, replace any reference to him in a Christian hymn or song with the idol we might have in our life that we are possibly struggling against.

So, I picked a song that was easy and I asked everyone to sing it with me. Here’s the song:

Jesus, I adore you

And I lay my life before you

How I love you.

Then I told them what we were going to do and asked what idol they wanted to use. They picked money. So, we sang:

Money, I adore you

And I lay my life before you

How I love you.

Through a lot of laughing the point hit home. Perspectives changed as people realized idols are hard to let go of, much less admit to. It is not that any of them are evil in and of themselves, but when we depend on them over God, they are in the wrong position. The song helped this message come home for the participants.

Give it a try and let me know if it changes your perspective. Think about that area as you sing it and the role it plays in your life.
