Relational Assets: Giving your whole self to God

We all understand Jesus had practically nothing in the material realm. Yet, he gave an incredible amount to those around him. Whether we have much materially or not, Paul tells us that true worship is to “…give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice – the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.” (NLT)

One of the exciting things in interviewing Jon, was his use of giving your whole self to the service of others – this giving he calls your Relational Assets. If you have nothing in your in your pockets, the only thing you have to give is who you are. There is nothing wrong with financial help or other material goods, but stripped of everything else, your Relational Assets are your gifts, talents, experiences, strengths, your mental, spiritual, emotional and physical abilities. This is the body you have to offer –being motivated by all he has done for us., God wants us to give it to others. This is true worship.

The other blessing in this, is that in giving ourselves openly to others and in a community, means we also allow others to know our needs and meet them. It’s not a one-way street. Everyone benefits. It also means we have the best chance to experience the fulfilled life Jesus spoke of in John 10:10.

Jesus is our example. He gave all that made up his body – mind, soul, spirit – in thanks to his Father and to benefit us. May you and I hear his call to put our whole selves on the line in service, stepping forward in the power of the Holy Spirit, knowing that he will be true to his promise to take care of all our needs.
